Box 1199 Williston, VT 05495 RE: The tariff classification of magnetic hooks from India Dear Ms. Ramsey: In your letter dated September 10, 2008, you requested a tariff classification ruling. The sample which you submitted is being retained by this office. The merchandise under consideration is described as “Set/2 Magnetic Hooks,” SKU# 65640. It contains two hooks made of brass plated iron that measure approximately 2-3/4 inches long by ¾ inch wide by 1 inch deep. They mount to the side of metal surfaces, such as file cabinets, kitchen appliances, mailboxes, etc. The literature you supplied indicates that they can be used to hang keys, jackets, potholder, oven mitts, dishtowels, aprons and holiday wreaths. Each hook is strong enough to hold articles weighing up to 1-1/2 pounds. The applicable subheading for the magnetic hooks will be 8302.50.0000, Harmonized Tariff Schedule of the United States (HTSUS), which provides for base metal mountings, fittings and similar articles…hat-racks, hat pegs, brackets and similar fixtures, and parts thereof. The rate of duty will be free. Duty rates are provided for your convenience and are subject to change. The text of the most recent HTSUS and the accompanying duty rates are provided on World Wide Web at http://www.usitc.gov/tata/hts/. This ruling is being issued under the provisions of Part 177 of the Customs Regulations (19 C.F.R. 177).
