How Duty Rates Work

Most countries apply Most Favored Nation (MFN) tariff rates to imports from WTO members. These are the default rates unless a preferential trade agreement (like USMCA, CPTPP, or the EU-UK TCA) provides lower rates for qualifying goods. Products must meet rules of origin requirements to claim preferential rates.

Duty rates are expressed as ad valorem percentages (e.g., 5.0% of customs value), specific rates (e.g., $0.50/kg), or compound rates combining both. Some products also face anti-dumping or countervailing duties on top of the base tariff rate. Comparing rates across jurisdictions helps importers optimize sourcing decisions and identify the most cost-effective trade routes.
