NY D86618 Modified; Lighted Lock Knob, Visual Signaling Equipment for Motor Vehicles
HQ 962654 APRIL 5, 1999 CLA-2 RR:CR:GC 962654 JAS CATEGORY: Classification TARIFF NO.: 8512.20.4040 Mr. Robert J. Resetar Porsche Cars North America, Inc. 980 Hammond Drive, Suite 1000 Atlanta, GA 30328 RE: NY D86618 Modified; Lighted Lock Knob, Visual Signaling Equipment for Motor Vehicles Dear Mr. Resetar: This is in reference to your letter of March 1, 1999, to the Director, Customs National Commodity Specialist Division, New York, regarding NY D86618. Your letter was referred to this office for reply. In NY D86618, which the Director of Customs National Commodity Specialist Division issued to you on February 10, 1999, a lighted lock knob, a product of Germany, was held to be classifiable in subheading 8512.20.4080, Harmonized Tariff Schedule of the United States (HTSUS), as other electrical signaling equipment. We have determined that the 10-digit statistical number in the ruling is incorrect. The article consists of a plastic knob containing an LED, a 5-inch copper core electrical wire, and a plastic encased processing board. Connected to an automobile’s electrical system, the LED in the device illuminates whenever a door opens or the dashboard lights are on. The correct classification is subheading 8512.20.4040, HTSUS, as other electrical signaling equipment for the vehicles of subheading 8701.20, or heading 8702, 8703, 8704, 8705 or 8711. - 2 - NY D86618, dated February 10, 1999, is modified under the authority of section 177.9(d)(1), Customs Regulations (19 CFR 177.9(d)(1). Sincerely, John Durant, Director Commercial Rulings Division
