Importation of Fruits and Vegetables

Agriculture Department, Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service

Abstract

We are proposing to amend the Fruits and Vegetables regulations to list a number of fruits and vegetables from certain parts of the world as eligible, under specified conditions, for importation into the United States. All of the fruits and vegetables, as a condition of entry, would be inspected and subject to disinfection at the port of first arrival as may be required by a U.S. Department of Agriculture inspector. In addition, some of the fruits and vegetables would be required to meet other special conditions. This action would provide the United States with additional kinds and sources of fruits and vegetables while continuing to provide protection against the introduction of injurious plant pests by imported fruits and vegetables. We are also proposing to declare certain areas in Mexico as fruit fly-free areas. Those areas would include three municipalities in the State of Baja California Sur, six municipalities in the State of Chihuahua, and six municipalities in the State of Sonora. This action would relieve restrictions while continuing to prevent the introduction of plant pests into the United States.
