The subject product, Sodium Taurocholate, is a bile salt. According to The Merck Index (13th ed.), Sodium Taurocholate is the sodium salt of Taurocholic acid, and the chief ingredient of the bile of carnivorous animals. The applicable subheading for Sodium Taurocholate, imported in bulk form, will be 2924.29.9500, Harmonized Tariff of the United States (HTS), which provides for “Carboxyamide-function compounds; amide-function compounds of carbonic acid: Cyclic amides (including cyclic carbamates) and their derivatives; salts thereof: Other: Other: Other.” The rate of duty will be 6.5 percent ad valorem. At the present time, Sodium Taurocholate is not listed in the Pharmaceutical Appendix to the Tariff Schedule. Depending upon use, this merchandise may be subject to the requirements of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act, which is administered by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), or the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA), which is administered by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
