Dear Mr. Covey: In your letter dated September 20, 1996, you requested a tariff classification ruling. The following samples were submitted: 1. Three square boxes, style number 259137, are nested one within the other. The boxes have two parts, a lower section and a detachable lid. They are made of a cardboard base covered externally with silk woven fabric. 2. Style 259136 is a photograph box. it is a lidded container designed to contain photographs. It is of a kind similar to a cutlery or jewelry box. The outer surface is of silk woven fabric with a cardboard base. The applicable subheading for style number 259137 will be 6307.90.9989, Harmonized Tariff Schedule of the United States (HTS), which provides for other made up articles...Other. The rate of duty will be 7 percent ad valorem. The applicable subheading for style 259136 will be 4202.92.9010, HTS, which provides for trunks, suitcases and similar containers, with outer surfaces of textile materials, other, containing 85 percent or more by weight of silk or silk waste. The rate of duty will be 19.5 percent ad valorem. This ruling is being issued under the provisions of Part 177 of the Customs Regulations (19 C.F.R. 177). A copy of the ruling or the control number indicated above should be provided with the entry documents filed at the time this merchandise is imported.
